Tmolus was a small Lydian city on the slopes of the mountain of the same name, administratively grouped under the Conventus of Sardis — the Roman judicial circuit centered on one of Asia Minor's great cities. Provincial bronzes of this type were issued under local magistrates, and the strategos named in the legend, Apollonidas son of Menekrates, would have personally overseen both the authorization and likely the financing of this emission. The dating to 161–176 places it within Marcus Aurelius's sole reign following the death of Antoninus Pius, before Lucius Verus died and the formal co-emperorship dissolved.
