At left, the Amazon Smyrna, city foundress and personification of Smyrna, holds a double axe (labrys) over her right shoulder. At right, the Tyche of Nicomedia holds a ship's rudder. Both figures have a prow (ship's forepart) at their feet, alluding to the maritime character of both cities. The reverse legend identifying the issuing authority and the presiding magistrate Menekles encircles the scene. |
