This bronze was struck under the homonoia convention between Ephesus and Alexandria — a formal declaration of civic friendship that entitled both cities to issue joint coinage. Such agreements were not merely symbolic; they reflected active competition among Greek cities of the Roman East for prestige, pilgrimage traffic, and imperial favor. Ephesus, as seat of the assize district and home to the Artemision, needed little help asserting its rank, but the Alexandrian alliance carried commercial weight along the Aegean-to-Egypt trade corridor that neither city could ignore.
Gordian III's reign saw a notable proliferation of these homonoia issues across the eastern provinces.
