| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of Demos personified, facing right, rendered in the provincial style typical of Phrygian civic coinage of the Severan period. The laureate wreath is rendered with bold, deeply cut individual leaves framing the head. Drapery is visible at the truncation of the neck, indicating a cuirassed or mantled effigy. The legend ΔΗΜΟϹ appears in the field, identifying the subject as the personified civic body of Hierapolis. The flan is irregular and the strike somewhat flat, consistent with provincial bronze issues of this era. |
