正面描述 Draped bust of Julia Maesa facing right, her hair elaborately waved and bound with a diadem, rendered in the conventional portraiture style of the Severan provincial workshops. The effigy occupies the central field with the legend encircling the bust. The portrait conveys the dignified, slightly idealized character typical of Severan-era civic bronzes from Asia Minor.

背面描述 Asclepius, the god of medicine, depicted standing facing with head turned to the left, his weight resting on a serpent-entwined staff (the caduceus of Asclepius) held in his right hand. The figure is rendered in a long himation in the conventional style of civic deity types common to Ionian provincial bronzes of the Severan period. The encircling legend names the supervising grammateus and the issuing city.

附加信息

Magnesia ad Maeandrum flourished under the Roman imperial period partly on the strength of its claim to be the birthplace of the general Themistocles — a civic boast the city leveraged aggressively in its coinage and public monuments. Issues naming a local magistrate, here Philoumenos in his second term, reflect the Conventus of Miletus arrangement under which Greek cities retained nominal administrative autonomy while Roman provincial oversight remained firmly in place. Elagabalus's brief, chaotic reign produced a surge of provincial bronze output as eastern mints rushed to acknowledge a new emperor whose power base had been entirely Syrian.
