The Chrysanthina was one of the great sacred games of Sardis, celebrated in honor of the city's patron goddess and drawing competitors from across the Greek East. Sardis held the rare distinction of triple neokorate status — recognition granted by Rome for maintaining three imperial cult temples — which is precisely why the city advertised it so aggressively on its civic bronze. The magistrate named in the legend, Hermophilos, is otherwise unattested outside of coinage, making these bronzes the only surviving record of his archonship.
