He is flanked on either side by a tree, each of which bears a bird perched among its branches, a composition evoking a sacred grove or sanctuary setting. The ethnic legend of Halicarnassus is inscribed in the field, encircling or flanking the central figure. The reverse type reflects a local cult or deity venerated in the Halicarnassus region, characteristic of the rich religious iconography found on Carian provincial bronzes of the Antonine era. |
