| 表面の説明 | Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Valerian facing right, depicted seen from the rear in the typical provincial style. The effigy presents the emperor in full imperial regalia, with the laurel wreath clearly rendered atop the head. The Greek legend encircles the portrait along the periphery of the flan, identifying the emperor by his full titulature. The flan is irregular and the surface shows characteristic patination consistent with provincial bronze coinage of the mid-third century AD. |

Priene issued this bronze under the joint reign of Valerian I and his son Gallienus, a co-emperorship that began in 253 when Valerian was elevated by his troops following the death of Aemilianus. The archon named in the legend — Julius Satorninos — was a local magistrate whose tenure anchored the coin's dating, a common practice in Ionian civic issues where municipal officials effectively signed the coinage.
Priene was a declining city by this period, its harbor long silted over by the Maeander river, stripping it of the commercial relevance it held in the Hellenistic age. Civic bronze production here ends abruptly with the 260s, when the broader collapse of provincial Greek coinage terminated most Asian mint activity.
