Additional information

Colophon, once among the wealthiest cities in Ionia and the reputed birthplace of Homer according to one ancient tradition, had long since faded from political relevance by the third century — its harbor town of Notium effectively replacing it as a functioning port. Bronze civic coinage under Trebonianus Gallus, whose two-year reign ended when his own troops defected to Aemilianus, represents one of the last phases of autonomous civic bronze production in the region before the collapse of that system entirely under Gallienus.
