Odessos — modern Varna on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast — was a Milesian colony whose civic bronze issues under Trajan reflect a city navigating the administrative reorganization of Moesia Inferior, formalized as a distinct province around 86 AD under Domitian. The city retained substantial autonomy in local coinage well into the second century, striking in its own name rather than as a dependent of the provincial koinon.
