背面描述 Artemis, as divine patroness of Ephesus, advancing right in a dynamic striding pose, her right hand drawing an arrow from the quiver at her shoulder while her left hand holds the bow. A dog runs to the right in the lower field, accompanying the goddess in the hunt. A star or decorative symbol appears in the exergue below the ground line. The reverse legend, distributed around the field, proclaims Ephesus as a four-time neocorate city, a prestigious civic honor. The composition reflects the high artistic standard of Ephesian civic coinage under the Severan emperors.

附加信息

Ephesus held the title of neokoros — temple warden — four times over, an honor granted by Rome that the city pursued aggressively through imperial petition and enormous financial outlay. The Δ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ legend on this issue advertises that fourth grant, awarded under Elagabalus but still proudly proclaimed under his successor Severus Alexander. These civic bronze issues were not struck by the Roman state but by the city itself, functioning as a form of institutional self-promotion within the provincial economy of Asia Minor.
