Trapezopolis was a minor Lydian city of limited political weight, yet its civic coinage under Septimius Severus reflects the broader scramble among Asian municipalities to cultivate imperial favor during the civil wars of 193 AD — the Year of the Five Emperors. The magistrate name ΑΠΟΛΛΩΝΙΟΥ preserved in the legend is one of the few surviving traces of local administrative personnel from this city.
Coins of Trapezopolis are genuinely scarce in any condition. The city's small population and limited output mean that die-links across known specimens are frequently traceable.
