Reverse description A tall amphora with two handles occupies the central field, flanked on each side by a symmetrical arrangement of two ears of grain and a poppy head, emblematic of the island's agricultural prosperity and its association with Demeter. The ethnic legend of the Chians is distributed around the periphery of the field in Greek characters. The composition is characteristic of the civic bronze coinage struck at Chios during the Severan period.
