Reverse description Nude Dionysus standing facing left, his weight resting in a relaxed contrapposto pose. In his right hand he holds a cantharus (wine cup) lowered toward his side, while his left hand supports a long thyrsus. At his feet, a panther — the sacred animal of the god — is depicted in attendance, completing the Dionysiac iconographic program favoured by cities of Mysia and the Pergamene conventus. The reverse legend encircles the scene, citing the name of the local magistrate Perperus Rufinianus and the ethnic of the Germeans.

Additional information

Germe was a minor Mysian city within the Pergamene conventus whose civic coinage under Philip I coincided almost exactly with his reign — itself cut short when his troops defected to Decius in 249 AD. The magistrate name preserved in the legend, Perperos Rufus, is one of the few pieces of administrative evidence we have for local governance in Germe during the mid-third century, a period when provincial bronze production across Asia Minor was already contracting sharply.
