Ephesus held the title of neokoros — temple warden — three times by this period, a distinction aggressively pursued through embassies to Rome and fiercely contested among rival Ionian cities. The Γ (third) neokorate designation on this coin reflects that accumulated status, likely confirmed under Severus Alexander before Maximinus seized power in 235. Maximinus never visited the eastern provinces; his coins struck there were acts of civic loyalty by cities that had no choice but to acknowledge a soldier-emperor they had never seen.
