Amastris was a coastal Pontic city with an unusually independent civic identity, founded by the niece of Darius III and later absorbed into Bithynia under Roman provincial reorganization. Bronze civic issues under Marcus Aurelius reflect a period when provincial mints exercised considerable latitude in honoring the emperor — the imperial portrait lending legitimacy while the reverse types remained entirely local in character.
The reference IV.1#5407 places this within the Amastris civic series catalogued under the reign, a grouping where die linkages have helped scholars reconstruct mint sequences that official records never preserved.
