The torches blaze at their summits and the serpents coil upward along their shafts, referencing the chthonic and mystery cult traditions associated with Cyzicus. The encircling legend ΚΥΖΙΚΗΝΩΝ ΝΕΟΚΟΡΩΝ, proclaiming the city's status as a neokorate — an honorific title granted for the maintenance of an imperial cult temple — runs around the border. The composition is a standard neokorate reverse type for Cyzicus under the Antonine emperors. |
