He holds a reed in one hand and rests his arm upon an overturned water-urn from which a stream issues, symbolizing the river's source. The field above retains traces of the legend, while the ethnic ΙΛΙΕΩΝ appears in the lower field, asserting the civic identity of Ilium. The composition reflects the strong Hellenic cultural tradition maintained by the city of Ilium in its provincial bronze coinage. |
