Magnesia ad Maeandrum held a complicated civic identity during the imperial period — the city claimed descent from Thessalian Magnetes and fiercely promoted its ancient association with the cult of Artemis Leucophryene, using coinage partly as a vehicle for asserting that prestige within the Milesian conventus. The magistrate name ΠΑΜΜΕΝΟΥϹ (Pammenos) appearing in the inscription ties this piece to a specific administrative moment recoverable only through die studies like those underlying the VII.1 corpus.
Gordian III's short reign generated substantial provincial bronze output across Asia Minor, largely because the emperor's campaigns against Shapur I created demand for visible Roman authority in eastern cities.
