The portrait is executed in the provincial style characteristic of the Lydian mint at Mastaura, with a beaded border encircling the field. The Greek imperial titulature runs around the bust as a continuous legend. |

Mastaura was a minor Lydian city in the Maeander valley whose civic coinage under Gordian III was administered by a local magistrate — the grammateus — whose name the inscription records as Claudius Hippodamianos. The office rotated among the civic elite, and the name preserved here is otherwise nearly unattested in the epigraphic record for this city, making each surviving bronze a rare incidental document of local administration.
