Aspendus was one of the most prolific civic mints in Pamphylia under the Severans and their successors, continuing to strike bronze for local circulation well into the reign of Gordian III. These issues funded municipal life — games, temples, civic distributions — without any authorization from Rome, a privilege the eastern cities had exercised for centuries under the looser fiscal arrangements of the imperial east.
The early years of Gordian III's reign were administratively turbulent: he came to power at thirteen, with effective control held first by the Praetorian prefect Timesitheus and later by Philip the Arab following Timesitheus's death in 243.
