| Reverse description | Draped, veiled and turreted bust of Tyche, the tutelary deity of Edessa, facing left, personifying the city's fortune and prosperity. In the field before her stands a figure of Marsyas (tentatively identified), depicted upright on a short column, bearing a wineskin over his shoulder; an altar is also present in the composition. The reverse type alludes to Edessa's civic pride and its status as a Roman colonial metropolis. The encircling Greek colonial legend ΜΗΤ ΚΟΛ ΕΔΕϹϹΗΝωΝ, meaning 'Metropolis Colonia of the Edessenes', frames the design. The composition is characteristic of the rich civic iconography employed by Edessa's mint during the reign of Gordian III. |
