| Beschrijving voorzijde | Confronted busts of Emperor Gordian III and the god Sarapis, facing one another at center. Gordian III is depicted laureate, draped, and cuirassed, his bust facing right and seen from the rear, while Sarapis, draped and wearing his characteristic modius headdress, faces left with a cornucopia positioned behind his left shoulder. The obverse legend encircles the busts in Greek characters, identifying the emperor by his imperial titulature. The composition exemplifies the provincial coinage tradition of presenting paired imperial and divine portraits to symbolize the harmonious relationship between ruler and deity. |
