| Descrizione del rovescio | To the left, Athena stands facing, head turned to the right, holding a patera (or owl) in her extended right hand and a spear in her left hand; to the right, Zeus Akraios is seated on a throne facing left, holding Nike in his right hand and a long sceptre in his left. The pairing of the two deities reflects Smyrna's civic religious identity and its homonoia relationship with Athens. The reverse legend, arranged in the field and exergue, identifies the Smyrnaean strategos and records the homonoia context. The composition is typical of the elaborate civic reverses produced by the mint of Smyrna under the Severan-era conventus. |
