Reverse description A nude heroic figure stands facing with head turned to the left, in a relaxed contrapposto stance. The figure rests his right hand upon a long spear and holds a sword in his lowered left hand, a composition characteristic of Hellenistic hero imagery common on Bithynian civic coinage. The Greek civic legend is distributed around the field, asserting Nicomedia's prestigious twice-neocorate status. The reverse type reflects the city's pride in its imperial cult temples and its standing as a leading metropolis of the Bithynian province.
