| Beschrijving keerzijde | The Egyptian deity Sarapis reclines to the left upon a garlanded ceremonial couch or kline, his upper body raised and turned slightly toward the viewer. In his extended right hand he holds an eagle, the bird of imperial and divine authority, while his left hand grasps a long transverse sceptre. The composition reflects the widespread veneration of Sarapis in Black Sea colonial cities, particularly at Sinope where the cult had deep Hellenistic roots. The encircling Latin colonial legend names the city and records the local Pontic era year CCLVIIII, corresponding to 213–214 AD. |
