Additional information

Year 3 of Antoninus Pius at Alexandria corresponds to 139–140 AD, the earliest years of his reign, when the imperial administration was still consolidating the administrative transition from Hadrian. The "L ΤΡΙΤΟΥ" reverse date — using the Egyptian regnal year formula — is characteristic of Alexandrian civic bronze, where the mint marked issues by regnal year rather than by consular dating. Alexandrian bronzes of this period circulated as fiduciary coinage within Egypt, which operated as a closed monetary system; Roman denarii could not legally circulate there without exchange.
