Tralles, a prosperous city in Lydia, held the rare distinction of issuing coinage under joint imperial authority during the co-reign of Valerian and his son Gallienus — a period defined by extraordinary military pressure on Rome's eastern frontier, including Valerian's catastrophic capture by the Sasanian king Shapur I at the Battle of Edessa in 260 AD.
