Stratonicea-Hadrianopolis was a double city in Lydia formed through the synoikism of two previously distinct settlements, its unwieldy joint name reflecting a civic identity that was still being negotiated well into the imperial period. Issues struck under the joint reign of Valerian and Gallienus represent some of the last substantial provincial bronze coinages from this mint before the broader collapse of the Greek imperial series in the 260s — a collapse driven less by local indifference than by the catastrophic military pressures that would eventually see Valerian captured by Shapur I at the Battle of Edessa in 260.
