Cibyra's civic coinage under Trajan Decius belongs to a mint that punched well above its regional weight — the city had been demoted from its earlier tetrapolic league status by Rome in 84 BC after backing the wrong side one too many times, yet continued producing bronze issues for local exchange through the imperial period with consistent civic pride. The ΚΙΒΥΡΑΤωΝ ethnic on the reverse is the city asserting an identity Rome had once tried to curtail.
Decius himself was killed at the Battle of Abritus in 251 AD, the first Roman emperor to die in combat against a foreign enemy — making all issues struck in his name a compressed two-year window.
