Prusias ad Hypium occupied a commercially active position on the Lycus River in Bithynia, and the city minted aggressively under Septimius Severus — likely in response to the civil wars of 193 AD that saw Severus defeat Pescennius Niger, whose support base lay heavily in the eastern provinces. Civic bronzes of this period functioned as local political endorsements as much as currency, and Prusias was conspicuously quick to align itself with the eventual victor.
