Iuliopolis was a minor Bithynian city of little strategic weight, but it minted prolifically under Septimius Severus — likely as a form of civic loyalty signaling during a reign that began in civil war. Severus secured Bithynia early, and provincial mints throughout the region rushed to strike in his name as he consolidated power against Pescennius Niger in 193–194. This coin is one product of that alignment.
