正面描述 Draped bust of Julia Domna facing right, with her characteristic elaborate coiffure of ridged waves swept back and gathered into a large bun of curls at the nape of the neck. The empress is depicted with finely rendered drapery over the shoulders and chest. The Greek legend ΙΟΥΛΙΑ ϹΕΒΑϹΤΗ runs around the periphery, and the flan is bordered by a beaded dotted rim. The portrait displays the refined Severan provincial die-engraving style typical of the Bithynian mint at Nicaea.

附加信息

Nicaea's civic bronze issues under Septimius Severus reflect the city's careful navigation of the civil wars of 193 AD — the so-called Year of the Five Emperors. Nicaea had backed Pescennius Niger, the eastern claimant, and after Niger's defeat Severus was notably slow to restore full civic privileges to cities that had opposed him in Bithynia. That Nicaea continued striking bronze at all under his name suggests a pragmatic, if uneasy, accommodation with the victor.

The Antoninus in the obverse legend refers to Caracalla, associating the younger Caesar with the issue and the dynastic program Severus pressed aggressively from early in his reign.
