Pionia was a small Mysian city whose civic coinage output was limited even by provincial standards, making named-strategos issues like this one valuable for reconstructing local administrative history. M. Aurelius Rufus held the office of strategos during the co-reign of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus — or, more likely given the date range, during the sole reign following Verus's death in 169 AD. The strategos named on provincial bronzes was the magistrate personally responsible for the issue, effectively staking his civic reputation on the coinage.
