Rhosus was a small coastal city in what is now the Iskenderun Gulf region, and its coin output was never prolific. The legend ΙΕΡΑϹ ΑϹΥΛΟΥ — "sacred and inviolable" — reflects a formal status granted by Rome, giving the city sanctuary rights that made its temples legally protected refuges. Hadrian's tour of the eastern provinces in 123–125 AD likely prompted a renewal or confirmation of such civic privileges, which cities routinely commemorated by issuing bronze.

The era date ΖΞΡ corresponds to year 167 of the Pompeian era, anchoring this piece to 125/126 AD. Rhosus adopted this reckoning from Pompey's reorganization of the region in 64 BC.
