Stratonicea-Hadrianopolis occupies one of the stranger entries in the administrative geography of Roman Asia Minor. The city was a Hadrianic double-foundation — or more precisely, a refoundation and renaming of an existing Lydian settlement — that fused two civic identities into a single entity as part of Hadrian's well-documented program of urban patronage across the Greek East during his 123–124 and 128–129 tours of the region. The unwieldy compound ethnic on this bronze, ΑΔΡΙΑΝΟΠΟΛΕΙΤΩΝ ϹΤΡΑΤΟΝΕΙΚ, reflects exactly that administrative awkwardness, with neither name willing to fully yield to the other.
Civic bronze of this mint is scarce in any systematic reference, and the conventus attribution to Pergamum places it within the wealthiest administrative district of the province of Asia.
