Obverse description Laureate, cuirassed and paludamentum-draped bust of Emperor Commodus facing right, seen from the front. The portrait presents the emperor in full imperial military dress, with the paludamentum fastened at the shoulder. A partially legible Greek legend surrounds the bust, identifying the emperor by his full titulature as Marcus Aurelius Commodus Antoninus Augustus. The style is characteristic of Alexandrian provincial coinage, with a robust, somewhat stylized rendering of the imperial effigy.

Additional information

Alexandria's provincial bronze coinage under Commodus was dated by regnal year according to the Egyptian calendar, making precise attribution within his reign straightforward when the year-numeral survives clearly — a useful check against the otherwise sprawling and often contradictory sequence of his Roman imperial issues. His reign ended with his assassination on New Year's Eve 192 AD, strangled by a wrestler named Narcissus after a poisoning attempt failed to kill him quickly enough.
