| Beschrijving keerzijde | Hygieia, goddess of health, depicted standing and facing right, her figure partially draped about the lower body. She extends her right hand forward holding a patera from which she feeds a large serpent that rises before her, while the reptile coils around her left arm or a staff. The ethnic legend ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ is distributed around the field, identifying the issuing city of Nicaea. The composition reflects the widespread veneration of Hygieia in Bithynian civic coinage of the second century AD. |
