Odessos, the Greek colonial city on the Black Sea coast of Moesia — modern Varna in Bulgaria — retained the right to strike civic bronze under Roman rule, a privilege extended to relatively few Moesian cities. These local issues served everyday low-value exchange in a region where imperial bronze rarely penetrated in sufficient quantity. The city had a long pre-Roman tradition of autonomous coinage stretching back to the fourth century BC.
The reign of Antoninus Pius saw a notable expansion of provincial bronze output across the Danubian frontier zone, likely connected to increased military garrisoning along the limes.
