Ephesus held the title of neokoros — temple warden — four times over, a distinction earned incrementally through imperial favor and aggressive civic lobbying. The Δ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ legend on this issue marks the fourth such award, granted under the joint reign of Valerian and Gallienus, and the city lost no opportunity to advertise the honor on its coinage. Ephesus was competing hard against Smyrna and Pergamon for primacy within the Asian conventus, and the neokorate count was civic currency in that rivalry.
