Iuliopolis was a minor Bithynian city with an outsized administrative ambition — it repeatedly petitioned for the status of a neokorate, the right to maintain an imperial cult temple, which was the dominant form of civic competition in the Greek East under the Severans. Coins were a primary vehicle for asserting that claim publicly.
