Amastris was a Pontic coastal city with an outsized civic pride — founded by the niece of Darius III and later a favored port under both Hellenistic and Roman administration. Provincial bronzes from this mint under Severus were issued autonomously, without imperial authorization from Rome, a practice the eastern Greek cities guarded jealously throughout the Severan period.
