Nicaea was one of the most prolific civic mints in Bithynia under Septimius Severus, issuing bronze coinage continuously across his reign as the city leveraged imperial favor following its early support for Severus in the civil wars of 193–197. That backing — backing the right man against Pescennius Niger, who drew heavy support from rival eastern cities — appears to have translated directly into sustained minting rights and civic prestige throughout the reign.
