Cius, the Bithynian port city at the mouth of the Astacus Gulf, struck provincially under Maximinus Thrax during one of the more politically awkward reigns in the third century. Maximinus never visited the eastern provinces and was despised by the Senate, yet civic mints continued issuing bronze in his name as a matter of administrative routine — loyalty expressed in metal, however grudgingly.
His reign ended with his murder outside Aquileia in 238, the year Roman politics produced no fewer than six emperors.
