Maximinus I never set foot in Phrygia, and the civic authorities at Cotiaeum knew it. The magistrate name preserved in the legend — Hermaphilos, serving in a first and second archonship — reflects the local elite's careful management of imperial loyalty at a distance, issuing bronze in the emperor's name to signal compliance while the man himself remained perpetually on campaign along the Rhine and Danube frontiers. Maximinus was dead within three years, killed by his own troops outside Aquileia in 238.
