He holds a steering rudder in each outstretched hand, the twin rudders alluding to the two seas — the Saronic and the Corinthian gulfs — flanking the isthmus. The colonial legend is disposed in the field to either side of the central figure, within a dotted border. The type is distinctive to the Roman colony of Corinth and closely associated with the city's maritime commercial identity. |
