Reverse description Dionysus stands facing with head turned to the left, his weight distributed in a relaxed contrapposto stance characteristic of Hellenistic divine imagery. In his right hand he extends a cantharus (wine cup) downward toward a panther crouching at his feet, while his left hand holds a long thyrsus (the staff of Dionysus). The composition reflects the strong Hellenistic religious tradition maintained in Bithynian civic coinage. The ethnic legend ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ appears in the field, identifying the issuing city of Nicaea.
