The Koinon of Bithynia — the provincial league of cities in the Roman province of Bithynia et Pontus — issued coins collectively rather than through any single civic mint, a function tied directly to the imperial cult and the financing of festivals held in Hadrian's honor. Hadrian visited Bithynia twice during his reign, the second time in 123–124 AD, and the province's enthusiasm for the emperor was unusually intense: it was in Bithynia, near Claudiopolis, that his companion Antinous drowned in 130 AD.
That personal connection gave the Koinon's coinage a charged political dimension rare among provincial issues.
