Obverse description Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Gordian III facing left, rendered from the rear in a dynamic three-quarter view. The emperor is depicted in military attire, holding a spear pointing forward over his right shoulder and bearing a large round shield against his left shoulder, the shield face decorated with a gorgoneion. The Greek imperial legend is distributed around the periphery of the field.

She extends her right hand, holding a patera from which she feeds a large serpent that rears upward before her. The civic ethnic legend ΚΙΑΝΩΝ is distributed in the field around the figure, identifying the issuing city of Cius in Bithynia.
