| Obverse description | Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Gordian III facing left, depicted from the rear in a three-quarter back view, a relatively rare and dynamic military portrait type. The emperor is shown bearing a forward-pointing spear and a shield resting against his shoulder, the shield face decorated with a gorgoneion apotropaic device. The obverse legend encircles the bust in Greek characters, identifying the emperor by his full imperial titulature. |
